Common questions
Why is the thumb impression square?
240 × 240 pixels is 3 cm by 3 cm at 200 DPI — a square. A phone photo is not square, so scaling it directly would distort the ridges. This tool crops to a square first and then resizes, which keeps the impression in proportion.
Blue ink or black ink?
LIC accepts either for the thumb impression. That is looser than the signature, which must be black. Use a clean stamp pad rather than a pen.
How do I avoid a smudged impression?
Ink the thumb on a stamp pad, press it straight down onto unruled white paper, lift straight up without rolling, and let it dry before scanning. Then crop tightly around the impression using the tool above.
Does LIC take my thumb impression again later?
Yes. LIC captures biometric data — right thumb impression or IRIS — at the Main examination, at document verification and at joining. It also warns not to have mehandi, ink or other coatings on your fingers on those days.
