- IBPS sets out substitutes in order: right thumb, then a finger of the left hand starting from the forefinger, then a finger of the right hand, then the left toe. Whichever you use, write on the uploaded document which finger and which hand or foot it is.

How to prepare it
- Ink your left thumb using a stamp pad in black or blue.
- Press it straight down onto plain white paper. Do not roll it sideways — that is what causes smudging.
- Let it dry, then scan or photograph it straight on in good light.
- Crop tightly around the impression using the tool above.
- Download at 240 × 240 px, 20–50 KB and upload it to the thumb impression slot.

Common questions
Left thumb or right?
Left, normally. IBPS only allows the right thumb if you do not have a left one. If neither thumb is available the guide works down a list — a finger of the left hand starting from the forefinger, then a finger of the right hand, then the left toe — and asks you to note on the uploaded document which one you used.
Can I use blue ink?
Yes, for the thumb impression. IBPS allows black or blue ink here, which is different from the signature and the declaration, where black is required.
Why 240 × 240 pixels?
It is a 3 cm square scanned at 200 DPI. A square is the natural shape for a thumb impression, so cropping to it should not cut anything off.
My impression is smudged. Does that matter?
Yes. IBPS states that an unclear or smudged upload may get the application rejected. Press once, firmly and straight down, without rolling the thumb sideways — rolling is what causes the smear. Let it dry before scanning.
Does any other exam ask for this?
It is unusual. IBPS asks for four separate uploads — photograph, signature, left thumb impression and a handwritten declaration — where most exams ask only for the first two. Check the notice for your own exam before assuming it is needed.
